The Artist

Laura Silverman is a visual artist from Baltimore, Maryland. She has been painting and drawing for over twelve years, and just received her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the American College of the Mediterranean in Aix-en-Provence, France in May of 2023. She graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia, and received her Bachelor of Science in Education, majoring in Art Education. She has received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Studio Art from Studio Arts College International in Florence, Italy.

While living as an American abroad in France for two years, she created a series of paintings and oil pastel drawings centering around life in the Mediterranean city of Aix-en-Provence, in addition to exploring the notion of space, her identity, and her corporeality through life-size self portraits. Her primary medium is oil paint, as its light capturing and reflecting qualities are of interest for her, but she also works in gouache, oil pastel, watercolor, pen and graphite.

After obtaining her MFA, Laura moved back to Baltimore, and is pursuing teaching painting and drawing at a collegiate level. She believes art education and exposure to the arts are pivotal in developing well-rounded individuals. Cultivating students’ love for art and instilling the passion that she has for the arts is both inspiring and fulfilling. Art is the vehicle in which we can seek to understand the shared experiences of the human condition; Laura believes art education and exposure to the arts are pivotal in developing well-rounded individuals.

Laura continues to make art in her studio outside of Baltimore, and explores how our environment shapes our identity. She works plein air, but also in her studio from her own photographs. Laura has been published in Women United Art Magazine, Issue V, Autumn 2023, and The Curator’s Salon, Spring 2024. She has shown in multiple galleries including in Italy, England, France and the United States and has works in various private collections in France, Germany, and across the United States. Laura plans to further investigate her hometown of Baltimore in her upcoming series, exploring changing light, local ecology, and beauty in the mundane.
